This is clearly a nothingburger, but, honestly, why do so many people have a hard time managing this? I own two domain names that I use for email, one for my businesses and one for personal. From time to time, the streams get crossed, but I make a deliberate effort to segment them. Am I unique in this? How hard is this?

not saying it's the case here. But, when you have something to hide, you use another source of communication (private server).
Or, it's a case of the old geezer not knowing any different (not knowing that it's at the very least unethical to transfer state (public) information through private, unprotected email.
