They fell for the classic political conceit: High on Their Own Supply. They forgot that the media exists as their propaganda arm, and have bought-in to their own hype hook, line, and sinker. This has created a negative feedback loop where they keep having worse and worse results, and keep pushing themselves further left as a response, because their propaganda is designed to convince others to push themselves further and further left.

The east coast, especially Washington, lives in a bubble, where they simply do not even hear the other side. There are no conservative voices in their ears, in their newspapers, on their tvs, etc. There are no conservatives in their grocery stores, at their children's schools, in their churches, or at their parks. Their friends are not conservatives. Indeed, no one they know are conservatives to their knowledge. They see themselves as the enlightened, the progressive, the intelligent, therefor all conservatives must be unintelligent, ignorant, and regressive. It is easy to paint with broad strokes those whom they do not know, do not interact with, and never hear. Their propaganda responded to conservative voices by explaining why they should never be listened to in the first place, thus making their bubble as impenetrable as possible.

They cannot self-correct because they have nothing but their own paid yes-men telling them what they shold do. The emperor has no clothes, has had no clothes for some time, has no idea he has no clothes, is dying of hypothermia, and is being told to continue wearing his fabulous wear (i.e., nothing).
