I get that all nerdy films tend to be big box office draws but that movie has terrible rewatch value, is never talked about as being an all time great yet no one is even close to touching it in box office revenue.

Ummm didn't TFA and JW both pass it in 2015

It was successful because of the 3D aspect imo

Not a nerdy film. It's the opposite. It is a visual spectacle that was designed to be seen in the theater in 3d.

At the time it came out, if i remeber right, 3D movies at normal theatres was a relatively new thing and the visuals of that movie blew people's minds. I remember everyone that saw it all they could talk about was how awesome the visuals were.

Also without looking it up, I'm pretty sure it made a killing in China.

It was an amusement park ride and a video game that was accessible by people who don't want to go to amusement parks or learn a video game.

3D tickets cost more than regular tickets.

While people like to deride the unimaginative plot with its Ferngully ripoff, white savior complex, and clear environmentalist and anti-capitalist message, in 3D, in the movie theaters, it was an absolutely brilliant spectacle. No movie has ever used 3D to create such an immersive and breathtakingly gorgeous viewing experience as Cameron did with Avatar. It doesn't hold up on video or tv because it loses that quality which made it so increadible.

Because it was visually awesome to see on the big screen, and everyone likes Pocahontas so they didn't mind seeing the alien version.

I'll admit it, I saw it three times in theaters.

It was freaking badass in Imax. I had never seen anything like it.

Because a lot of people watched it. I thought this was a given.

I actually walked out the theater for this one, eventually caught it on TNT, other than the graphics I don't get the hype

Because of the 3D. I never saw it in theaters, but that's all everyone talked about. No one talked about the plot, just the great visuals. I watched about half of it on TV years later and it really wasn't a good movie without the 3D, big screen visuals.
