The identity of the first human to go to the LEO, moon, mars, etc. doesn't necessarily matter. What do you think would be different if he went to the moon rather than another person? --edited to clarify-- define what you mean by "he wins absolutely everything if he does it"
He has said many, many times that the odds of success in this (space) endeavor are extremely low. At the start he only gave SpaceX a 10% shot of surviving. Even now, he sees the Mars goal as being close to "possible" but still far from "likely".
From what I can tell, your primary concern is that he's risking other lives to build toward achieving his own personal goal. He has talked extensively about this risk reward trade off. In this situation specifically, he's got a private party coming forward to fund their own personal mission of their own accord.
