You should be able to make that price range work. If you want a nice family area with good schools, look into Rockridge (Oakland), Bushrod (Oakland), or North Berkeley.
ETA: If the household income will increase by ~40%, you'll take a cost of living hit. Many CPI calculators put an increase of around 60% is needed to maintain a fully equal living experience between the two cities.
