Looking back it seems they handled it as best they could. Absolutely no one could have expected the duplicate best actress envelope to be mistakenly given to Beatty and Dunaway. If Beatty could have realized he had the wrong envelope he could have stopped everything and called out the two reps from PwC to tell them. That would have caused mass confusion for about 5 minutes 
I wonder if PwC survives being associated with the Oscars. I'm guessing the two reps for PwC will be on media today saying they screwed up or trying to explain it away.

They'll be fine. They've had a failsafe in place since Sir Laurence Olivier announced the winner without opening the envelope (he read the first nominee as the winner, which as luck would have it was the actual winner: Amadeus).
They have someone ready to run out if the wrong name is announced, which is what happened. My guess is that they draw the line at snatching the Oscars out of people's hands or pulling the mic away from them mid-speech.
