From reading online those door things only close a door, do they regulate how fast it closes? They made so a door is not left open, but I can't tell if they actually prevent a door from slamming?

They're hydraulic so I assume the rate at which it closes is regulated by the fluid inside

They work perfectly for this. Your condo should have one already on it. There are adjustments you can make to the "close" and "latch" speed/ force. YouTube has plenty of videos showing how to adjust.
If your unit is 8+ years old, you may need to replace it.
Edit: You may need to make small adjustments to latch speed setting in winter months. Ours works perfect in summer and prevents the slamming you're worried about. When it colder out, we need to make a small adjustment in the setting so it has enough force to "latch" when the fluids are colder.
