Not sure how one of these two books hasn't been mentioned already.

Flyboys: A True Story of Courage by James Bradley

and

Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley and Ron Powers

Both are excellent, but Flyboys is especially good. Details a lot of U.S. air corp history throughout the war in the western theater, including the American volunteers who fought for China prior to Pearl Harbor. Flags of Our Fathers is based on the battle for Iwo Jima, and the 2 flag raisings on the island mount.

I really want to read his other two books, The Imperial Cruise, and The China Mirage.
