Did Simon and Schuster have any real data to prove that people would not want his book anymore? Or did they bow before outrage from people who would've never bought the book ?

I don't think sales (of this book) have much to do with his former publisher's decision- Milo pushed the limit too far he might have pissed off a cash cow fiction author or threatened the imprint's reputation.
