This discussion came up this weekend with friends. Which of the two freshman infielders has more overall potential?

I don't either one has more than the other. Sounds like a cop out and maybe it is. But while I think Slaughter has and probably always will have more power than Smith, I think Smith can still show higher than average power if not more. And I also think Smith will be the better defender and hit for more average. Arms are a wash. Smith reminds me a little of Mike Fontenot.

Thoughts?

After one weekend, I'll vote Smith.

Don't feel like I've got to see enough of Slaughter's fielding ability, but I feel like he has more power potential, smith more speed, smith a little quicker in the field with prob a slightly better glove. I'll go him, but its too early for me to tell.

Well Smith won the competition for 3B and will man SS for 2 years, so Manieri obviously thinks his glove is better.

Slaughter has a higher ceiling but both are studs.

Not to be a dick but does it matter? Why can't you just enjoy both? They are both going to be great. Why does everything have to be compared?

Like everyone has already said both are very impressive, but to me Slaughter will keep rising even after college. Smith will probably be just as good, possibly better in some aspects but all around, it will take Smith more effort to keep up IMO. Both could be all SEC possibly all american. See when you think about them in all american terms IMO, slaughter has the better chance. Either could take the other, it's still early.

I also really like that Peterson kid along with Eric Walker, Hess looks like he will need a little time but maybe he just had an off day. I like many of the offensive weapons we have like Crooms, Woley, and Templet. Esp Crooms and Woley. Would probably put one of those guys in at DH going forward.

Defense looked great but will get even better which is scary. Same goes for the offense so this could be the year. GT

It is waaaaay too early to tell If one will break away but both are talented youngsters. I give the nod to the spirit of Beech Street north Baton Rouge turned CHS Tiger Smith, but I got blood in the hood.

Go Tigers. Keep getting better

Smith just because of his defensive ability too.

Slaughter has more room to fill out and become a real power threat at the college level but both will have outstanding careers.

C'mon, you really think the Catholic boy isn't going to get the nod on this board?

This comment has nothing to do with your question, but I thought it was pretty interesting that Slaughter's HS teammate was also a Day 1 freshman starter for UT Longhorns. Pretty impressive squad they had at Ouachita Christian. 2 freshman infielders starting at major D1 programs.
