This is the result of the abandonment of Christianity in the west. It's a moral issue, not a political one. When you make yourself a god, you get pretty pissed off when people dare to challenge you, and since you make your own moral laws, you don't have to play by the rules of others.

There's a lot more validity to your point than most people want or would be willing to admit.
