theenemy-I'm guessing its more of a northern or midwestern thing of turning basement into a apartment type living arrangement.

Because for people who do not live on sand, basements are where many lived to get away from MOM and Dad for privacy. Easier to wack it, when you have the basement door+creaky steps as an alarm system.

These guys described it succinctly early in the thread. It was used here, and in general discussion, long before public university tuition put anyone who just got a bachelor's degree in a whole lot of debt. I remember hearing it in the 70's about a couple of my friends' older brothers that were still at home.

Had friends in both the hilly areas of Mississippi and North Louisiana who's parents had split level houses that gave them a similar situation. A garage apartment or cottage at one's parent's home would be similar setups.

Some stereotypical example are:

Kevin Smith's 'Warlock' character in Live Free or Die Hard.

The ESPN/John Clayton 'Hey Mom, I'm done with my segment!'
