I agree, he's plenty smart but not a wordsmith. Right now the MSM is still pretty powerful but wounded.
Their undoing would be Trump ignoring them at this point because every time he speaks the MSM has hoards of Leftists ready to twist and remove context from anything he says. He should let his hired guns handle the daily dirty work with the MSM.

See I disagree. I think Trump actually comes across as more likeable this way than being silent.
By remaining silent you can give the impression that you're guilty, and it allows the press to build up a caricature like they have Bannon.
