Benzo's bind to GABA A receptors and alcohol binds to GABA B receptors. Now both have almost the same withdrawal symptoms if you're dependent on it. (Potential for seizures and even death).

They can also have a synergistic effect which proves that they act in a very similar manner. Which receptor sites they act on really doesn't matter in terms of the risks and the behavioral effects.
