Depending on budget and needs, these would be the three I'd look at.

4Runner Limited: $42k, built solid, will last forever, 1 or 2 kids (bad 3rd row). Bad gas mileage.

GX460: $58k, probably the only Toyota/Lexus more reliable than the 4Runner. The closest we can get to the land cruiser in the US without spending $85k. Built on the Land Cruiser Prado platform. Bad gas mileage. Outdated electronics, looks like a 4Runner Limited on the inside. Ok 3rd row.

Highlander Platinum: $47k. Best technology of the bunch. Most practical and best gas mileage. Just went to a direct injection engine (2GR-FKS) in 2017 which could affect reliability. The engine was introduced on the Tacoma in 2015 and I'd like to see a few more years of data before assuming it's as good as the engines in the 4Runner or GX460.

Is this the Highlander engine that turns off when you come to a stop? That feature is really annoying and abrupt.

SO has been considering a Highlander. I think she's going to get a RAV 4 or forester since we don't have kids or anything.

What do y'all like about the higher end packages? I didn't really care too much about anything that a limited had compared to an LE plus.
