Dear lord who the hell is doing your work? If you have someone that actually knows what they are doing you shouldn't have any of these problems.
It depends on where the house is, how it is designed and how good the addition is drawn, built and fitted to the existing. I like old Metairie and plenty of those houses have been added too.

I've seen some really nice additions to old houses that are architecturally pleasant on the outside and modern and contemporary on the inside.
