Follow a structured decision making process (you and your wife)
1. Define the problem and write a problem statement.
2. List of fundamental objectives, means objectives, attribites by which to measure your objectives (cost, happiness, etc.)
3. Come up with a list of alternatives to compare.
4. Analyze the consequences. Can usually do pretty simply with a model in excel.
5. Perform a trade-off analysis
6. Make your decision!
7. Ignore the previous 6 steps of solid decision analysis and just listen to the irrational thoughts of your wife
