I don't know the answer but we took the gamble. We updated all three of our bathrooms. The two guest bathrooms have regular tub/shower setups. My master had a massive jetted tub. I didn't want the big tub and wanted a shower. Like you I didn't have the configuration for both. So we built a huge (4'x8') walk-in shower with rain head, regular shower head, and a bench with a handheld shower setup.
I love the shower. I hope not having a tub in the master bathroom doesn't affect potential resale but with the quality of the shower and the bathroom overall, I can't imagine.
