Firing squad or hanging should be the execution methods in the United States. The condemned gets to pick if the state offers both, and the condemned ought to have the right to a blindfold (firing squad) or hood (hanging).
Long drop hanging (if done correctly) is painless and instantaneous. Firing squad is somewhat more dicey, but offers the condemned some small amount of honor.
This "get a shot in a hospital room, go to sleep and never wake up" - lowers us to the level of pet dogs and cats. The fact it takes us 7 to 20 years in most cases from conviction to this point makes one wonder if doctors and lawyers haven't formed secret unions to keep them all gainfully employed.
