Navy’s ability to use these planes is now greatly hindered as more than 60 percent of the jets are out of service.
quote:
That number is even worse for the Marine Corps, where 74 percent of its F-18s – some of the oldest in service – are not ready for combat operations.
quote:
“Our long-term readiness continues its insidious decline,” Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. William Moran testified Wednesday before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
quote:
While we are still able to put our first team on the field, our bench is largely depleted.”
quote:
“It’s a simple matter of supply can’t meet demand,” Moran said.
quote:
The Air Force is the branch of the military that arguably is in the most dire straits, with aircraft numbers falling from 8,600 in 1991 to 5,500 today. There are 55 fighter squadrons, down from 134, and less than 50 percent of its combat forces are “sufficiently ready for a highly contested fight against peer adversaries,” Air Force Vice Chief Gen. Stephen W. Wilson said in reference to countries like Russia and China.
quote:
But they’re not ready in the sense that they are not prepared to take on a peer adversary like Russia or China.”

Almost certainly the result of misuse rather than lack of funds.
For as much as we spend on the defense budget, it is indefensible for us to not operate at full readiness at any time.

That's what happens when you have a President in office for eight years who couldn't give a shite about the military. Funds are really tight right now. I'm currently stationed in Hawaii and I have friends who were supposed to PCS to their next command back in December who are still here waiting for orders. The Navy does not have the money to even cut orders for some of these guys.

Didn't take Trump long to screw that up.

And this isn't a sudden thing - under the prior administration, the brass was willing to play along with the charade. None of them have the balls to lie to Mattis.
When you focus on being PC, "rape culture", Sexual Harassment, EO, Transgender integration, social engineering and nation building - to the exclusion of all other concerns, your warfighting abilities are going to suffer. (Even the USMC.)

This is normal.
NORMAL.
For fricks sake. Only a small portion of the armed forces are combat ready officially at any time. You cycle down and cycle up.

Obama's fundamental trans-formative government.

This the MIC's passive aggressive way of demanding more money.

Shortages of parts and aging equipment are already affecting readiness, and the effects are expected to worsen. On August 4, 2000, Kenneth Bacon, the DOD Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, told reporters that spare parts are so scarce that the Air Force is made to "cannibalize" perfectly good aircraft for spare parts.39 In April, 40 percent of the Army's helicopters were assessed as being either unable or at high risk of being unable to perform their mission.40 The impact this has on America's readiness to fight wars is immense. For example, by day 60 of a two-war scenario, 44 percent of the Army's Apache helicopters and 52 percent of its Kiowa helicopters will not be available due to shortages in spare parts.41
Doom and Gloom from military commanders, saying we were incabale of fighting a war cause we weren't ready. 14 months later we were fighting a war in Afghanistan.
Strange how we were able to rev up so quickly.

In fairness the military brass is part of the problem

If the hiring freeze stays in place you will see a very drastic degrading of military readiness over the next few years. Civilians are the backbone of military acquisition and a lot of them are retiring

Someone needs to ask them what they're doing with all their money.

Too much worrying about social engineering and less on troop readiness over the last 10 years by the higher ups.
Social engineering has driven many out of the service.

Doesn't matter. We have trained trannies in the trenches.

We need to cut military spending anyway.

dims always do their best to destroy/gut the military.

How about our military sheds its culture of waste and then they could afford new toys
Posted on 2/9/17 at 3:44 pm to Jjdoc
How much money goes into military spending again?
I swear the biggest waste of money is due to how inept the Pentagon is with the money it's given. Just streamlining the military would save this country more money than most of the committees on the chopping block combined.
