if tied after a quarter you go to sudden death.

An extra period is literally what every other team sport does. Basketball and Hockey have timed periods, Baseball has an extra inning, soccer has a timed period that goes to "sudden death" (penalty kicks) if it remains tied. College football is basically a hybrid of baseball and the NFL. Winning a coin toss shouldn't provide such an advantage

My idea solves this problem. Playing an extra quarter and then sudden death is no better than playing straight sudden death.
