Turns out the bulb was not pushed all the way into the socket. It clicked once and then I had to push REALLY hard with both hands to get the bulb seated all the way in the socket to get a second click. hopefully this helps some people like me who just aren't pushing the bulb all the way in which results in the bulb burning out quickly/shorting.

This is probably it. I just went through this, even took it to the mechanic. He took the thing out, pushed the bulb in all the way and just looked at me in disappointment.

It was embarrassing...but free, at least.
