when they get burnt the amperage spikes at the terminals sometimes causing the bulb filaments to burn out.

Turns out the bulb was not pushed all the way into the socket. It clicked once and then I had to push REALLY hard with both hands to get the bulb seated all the way in the socket to get a second click. hopefully this helps some people like me who just aren't pushing the bulb all the way in which results in the bulb burning out quickly/shorting.
