Snapper Tags?

Edwards hinted he might be amenable to one option: distributing fish tags to individual anglers that they could fill any time they wanted during the year. "I'm going to ask Sec. Montoucet to work with you and others to gauge the viability of a different approach," Edwards said. "Maybe on the nine-day season, for example, the licensed angler gets to decide which nine days (to fish) so that you're not forced to go out and fish when the marine forecast suggests you shouldn't be out there.

Gov. John Bel Edwards told a packed conference room in Baton Rouge Thursday his administration fully supports state management of red snapper, despite efforts of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in 2016 to combat a Congressional bill that would transfer regulation authority to Louisiana and the other four Gulf States.
quote:
"It isn't just going to come to us; I understand that," he said. "It's either going to happen through an act of Congress or because working through the Gulf Council, we secured that autonomy. ... I believe it's prudent to move in both directions at once."

Was at the lunch as a guest of a legislator. He made a joke about the whole Melanson debacle. Said he and the new Secretary were committed to state management of snapper. Thanked the recreational sportsman for supporting through extra $7.50 thru 2018.

I was there, and I don't specifically remember the Gov. using the word "tags". I'm not saying he didn't, but it sure seems I would have remembered that with as opposed to fish tags I am. Does anyone remember his specifically saying anything about tags?

He did not say tags. He just suggested that somehow recreational fishermen could get the 9 days throughout the year as they saw fit.
Edit: he could have clarified it later though during one-on-one interview. After the lunch was over they were setting up to ask him questions.

Lol, "fish tags". Huge waste of money for everyone to catch a prevalent species.

Meet a higher up biologist while camping out down river in Venice. He was saying the reason for the strong commercial push on snapper vs rec was because mr Melanson source of info on snapper was coming from a lobbyist...... For commercial fishing.......
Recreational guys were f'ed from the beginning.

This is a little long but worth the listen if you want the details about what went down. Melancon's top aide was a commercial guy who has a history of butting heads with recreational guys. Go to 27:50 Interview
