That's really not that shocking when you look at the context. The Deer Hunter had just won Best Picture the year before and Oscar voters were probably hesitant to award another Vietnam War film their top prize so soon afterward. Also...Kramer vs. Kramer absolutely cleaned up that night. Not including Best Picture, it won Oscars for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

I would have given Francis Ford Coppola a Best Director award as a consolation prize at the very least, however. He literally went through hell making Apocalypse Now and it's a testament to his skill and craftsmanship that the movie turned out as well as it did.
