Nobody is watching Merkel. Everyone knows that Russia and Putin only respect strength. Obama and Merkel were weak and that is why when Obama and Merkel gave an inch, Putin took Crimea. Everyone is watching Trump to see if he is as strong as he says he is and if so how Putin will respond.
