Most of the boys in my neighborhood were given BB guns and bow & arrows around age 7 or 8. We routinely had BB gun wars. Our favorite activity with the bows was to shoot as high as possible straight up in the air and see who would be the last to run for cover.

Some buddies of mine did that when we hung out a few years back.

Cowboys got the BB guns, Indians got the bows and arrows. It was like a Medal of Honor to get a BB under your skin.
When we played Rat Patrol we used mud wrapped firecrackers for hand grenades. I remember digging holes to set up booby traps. We used bottle rockets in pieces of pipe for bazookas.
I remember having a steam engine powered erector set.
Major disappointment in my chemistry set when I discovered there were no explosive recipes.
