Chess was a very different game back then. Not rules wise but competition wise. He is known as being the first modern player though. He was a great genius that played the game positionally in the way that modern gm's play. Truly before his time. It is interesting that when his games that we have the notation for are run through engines they are very precisely played. Just leaps above the competition at the time. But the competition was very weak relatively speaking.

Morphy is actually significant in US History. He was the first American to take on Europe culturally and emerge victorious.
