I can't really comment on how common those shows are vs. the reverse because I don't watch them, but if true then I'd say it's just a result of the way things have always been. No doubt these shows are comedies, and it's just inherently funny when the leader or head of household would be absolutely lost without his "supporting cast".

But yeah, any relationship with a controlling member surely lacks respect to some degree. Did I imply that it's ok if the roles are reversed? I apologize if I did, but it should be obvious which way these things go in the overwhelming majority of cases.
