They are most definitely a threat to Europe. The EU made a silly decision to go single currency which leaves weaker economies perpetually vulnerable (see Greece). Russia has undermined the post-war institutions which have given Europe its longest era of peace since between the Crimean War and WWI. So the Russian threat is symbolic, in that it could undo the great American achievement of leading the post-war world. Russia has also effectively made Iran into one of the post powerful states in Central Asia, and has thrown the balance of power in the ME into disarray.
