I would go as far as to say that the income equality and the general lack of opportunities have led people to become distraught with the system.
Think about, the two best candidates this election cycle were Trump and Sanders, both of which were anti-establishment (although with different approaches).
Republicans made the smarter move by picking up their anti-establishment candidate while the Dems double down on maintaining it.

Republicans were dragged kicking and screaming into a position where they had to embrace the swelling populist sentiment.
Democrats rigged their primary so that an unlikable, untrustworthy woman who rode her husband's coat tails into a career in politics can win because "it was her turn".
I would not call republicans "smart" for this. Just less twisted and stupid than Democratic Party leadership. Certainly less arrogant.
