I recently came into a 12-foot 54-inch bottom flat in real good condition. The plaque says it is rated for 15 HP. I've been looking online the past week or so, and after seeing more 20-25hp Evinrude/Johnson than 10/15hp. Are there any laws in Louisiana against overpowering?

Being a two-stroke, I would doubt there is a major weight difference in the outboard from 15 to 20.

there is a law about overpowering. I think they would let you slide if it was only 5 hp rather than putting a 40 on it.

From LDWF,

quote:

OVERPOWERING:
No watercraft shall be equipped with any motor or other propulsion machinery beyond its safe power capacity taking into consideration the type and construction of such watercraft and other existing operating conditions.

No reference to Coast Guard plate? How freakin' vague...

We have dropped 40 mercs on 12ft and raced them in the river. Get in where you fit in

Ya, that's about all I saw. I've seen guys overpowered before, but not much.

Me personally, if I wasn't worried about insuring it, I would not hesitate.

Thanks guys, this boat will be just for duck hunting and fishing sporadically during the year, not an every weekender. Won't be getting insurance for it.

I know a 9.9 mercury cover fits on a 20/25 hp mercury...

My brother has a 12ft 48 bottom with a 25 4stroke and it will do about 30mph. Its better with 2 people in the boat because with only one, it takes forever to plane out with the hopping.

One thing is for sure, you'll never wish you had a smaller motor on the back. Put a 20/25 with a 4 blade and you'll be fine. Just don't crack it back all the way and put some weight to the front. You would also benefit if you add some basic trim tabs.

Not sure if your interested but I have a 2010 25hp evinrude etec I purchased from magnum outboard in Harvey with only around 10 hours I'll be trying to sell soon. It was bout with only 8 hours and there's nothing wrong with it I just bought a surface drive not long after buying it and haven't used it much. Also has brand new controls with it.

i had a boat that was 50 hp overpowered... bitch ran like a scared rabbit

THat is a wide little boat if it has a 54 inch bottom a 25 should be no problem. My 12 ft jon boat only has a 32 inch bottom and a 48" deck.

Ya I was just thinking about it, I measured the deck. More than likely a 48-inch bottom.

They just posted a 20HP Johnson that I might go take a look at this weekend if it just needs carb work.
