By the same token, track & basketball low income family relatives can't fly halfway across the country all season either.
What I don't understand is why do big hard nosed football players "need" their families so much during college & other sport athletes seem to not even care as much?

They don't, but if you're choosing between good options, the convenience of being close to home can be the tie-breaker.
