re: Jail for a seat belt violation?

My first year out of law school, I had a court appointment to defend a man on a misdemeanor. We cut a nice deal for him (he had a record, but the D.A. agreed to put him on probation).

This particularly County Court at Law Judge (Texas) liked to give a little lecture as part of his sentencing. About halfway through, my guy jumps up and says "If I had wanted a sermon, I would have gone to church."

Needless to say, it didn't end well.
