According to Marc and Claire Headley, two Scientologists who left the Church in 2005, residents at the base are not permitted to leave without the permission of a supervisor and have to work at least 16 hours a day, from 8 am to past midnight, with shorter hours on Sundays and little time for socialising. Communications with the outside world are effectively cut off; cellphones and Internet access are generally banned, mail is censored and passports are kept in a locked filing cabinet. The perimeter of the base is closely guarded around the clock. It is ringed with high fences that are topped with spikes and razor wire and monitored by inward-facing motion sensors to detect anyone trying to climb out of the compound. The Tampa Bay Times reported that dozens of workers tried to escape from the base – some of them repeatedly – but were caught and returned by Sea Org "pursuit teams". The escapees are said to have been subjected to isolation, interrogation and punishment on their return to the compound.
From that same link you reposted.
Also....Scientology basically makes believers rat out their family members. For example if you and your spouse are both Scientologists and your spouse begins to voice doubts about Scientology and raise questions about it...you MUST file a report on your spouse to the headquarters for investigation. Because your spouse merely raised doubts...they can be seen as an enemy of the church. If you don't file a report against your spouse...you can be seen as an enemy as well for not making the report.
Many Scientologists have NO IDEA some of the stuff that really goes on. If they live in those compounds...they have no internet access to the outside world. One guy living in such a compound was given a Kindle from his wife(one of the really older ones that was not also a tablet). He figured out that you can actually access the internet from his kindle(something Scientology officials at the compound didn't know...or they would have never let him have the kindle). He googled Scientology just because he wanted to read about all the wonderful things the church has done all over the world. Instead his search popped up several articles about abuse and families torn apart, etc. This simple search opened his eyes to the truth about the church and led to him and his wife eventually planning their escape from the church.

That was Ron Miscavige(David's dad). He was on the A&E show and is a critic of Scientology now.
eta: why is this thread anchored?
