Divisions were split up to keep Alabama and Auburn division rivalries intact. It is closer to a North/South line than it is an East/West line.

It is the divisions, not each individual team, that are called East and West. Just as much of West Virginia is east of much of Virginia, if you look at the state as a whole, it's easy to see where the state got its name.
As far as the SEC, the East division is, by and large, the easternmore division and West, westernmore.
And no, it's closer to East-West than North-South. Five of the East division's schools are east of the entire West division; only three of the schools are so north.
