I'd say it's 20% mental. Once you're sick, it's over. Nothing can make it better other than stable ground and or puking. Nausea hits me worse than most. Dramamine helps but you have to take it well in advance.

I have found that getting into the water for a swim helps a lot once you're sick. Of course, conditions have to be safe for this.
There are some herbal preventatives that work for many.
