I have social graces and recognize there's a way to give someone constructive criticism without pissing them off and making them feel embarrassed or inadequate.

The way he went about talking to her like a child was way more problematic (to her) than the content, I guarantee.

I've gone through this often with my husband: it's not always what you're saying, but the way you say it. Her perception of the situation was likely that she thought "what in the hell? We've been dating a year and he's now starting to nit pick about the way I hold a fork. We were having a nice lunch. What other inane shite do I do wrong that he's waiting to bring up?"

I'm not saying proper manners aren't important in certain settings, but if I've learned anything by being married...choose. your. battles.
