Seen that happen with 3.5" BB's too. They're tough.
Like other said, lead and shoot for the head on crossing/passing shots. If straight up shoot at the wing to bring them down. Instead of squaring up on them, I shoot the armpit, where the wing meets the body. Still lead them, but just get a little left or right of center.

When we cleaned birds, anything that hit the breast didnt penetrate. All died from head shots or chasing them after a wing was hit.
