be careful getting her a gun that is too small. the smaller the gun the higher the recoil will be.
i would say:
1) involve her in the purchase.
2) advise her to get the largest gun she can reasonably carry...this pretty much goes for anyone though. also keep in mind "reasonable" will depend on many factors such as attire and method of carry.
3) get her shooting that thing!
4) both of you take a defensive handgun course if you have not already. remember "it's the indian, not the arrow, that matters"...in fact you may consider doing this first as it will allow you to make a more informed decision on the purchase
