At a minimum, it makes it difficult for approaching vehicles to tell if you've got a turn signal on and/or brake lights. It is also generally reserved for vehicles pulled over on the side of the road, so in low visibility situations, it only adds to the confusion by making it difficult to tell whether or not a vehicle is on the side of the road or in a travel lane.

Whatever you gain from additional visibility you lose and then some with added confusion and the inability to communicate your intentions to approaching drivers.
