I would argue that for the vast majority of those 238 there was a high level of assimilation by immigrants into western culture.
Again, race =\= culture

You're wrong. The US was not "multicultural", it was a "melting pot" where you came with your culture but integrated into the overall culture. Multiculturalism involves remaining truer to your roots and not integrating into the whole.

For much of that time immigrants assimilated. We formed a unique country made up of individuals who maintained their ancestral pride while also celebrating their American identity and values. We shared re same basic ideas/beliefs. It was understood that when you came to America you worked to become an American. You didn't want the shitty parts of the country you left to be replicated.
That doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
