Get a started dog from a good trainer/breeder. Skip the puppy stage and its ready to roll when you pick him/her up.

This is what I'll do with my next one. I trained a $100 BLM when I was in college and he turned out great. Force fetching is really the only place you can screw up by doing it yourself. Get involved with a local hunt test group and you'll get a lot of good guidance and gain experience. I won't have time to train a dog again until I'm retired, but it is very rewarding.
