I was talking to my sister yesterday who is turning 70 in January. We were talking about Trump and his plans to M.A.G.A. and the discussion turned to how to wean people off of government dependence.
Back when we were growing up in the 50 & 60's in rural East Baton Rouge Parish, we knew people who needed help. The help that was available to them, at that time, was given by Churches, family, and fellow neighbors. We didn't know of any government assistance. Today there seems to be a government program for every contingency.
I know there are back-to-work programs out there, but......how do you encourage people to work who have never had to work to survive?
To me, it seems like these government programs have created a "crack cocaine society"....become addicted and never get off.
What do you guys think?

Yes. The best part, is that then, you can use the money you would have had to spend on you own upkeep, on actual crack! Win Win!!

What an awful time to be alive that must have been. I'm glad we have resources citizens can actually use to get help.

Lame reply but still accurate..in the broader sense govt assistance as crack is a great analogy..my 83 y/o dad told me to never take it as it makes people dependent which his dad told him during the great depression

Bad thing is it's happening throughout society. Nearly everyone that serves in the military gets disability of some kind.

That might of been a tough time but we didn't know of anyone who did without..black or white. It taught us lessons in life that you obviously missed.

I actually agree with that. The difference is that those examples actually provide needed things.

I'm not sure that this is the best example of something negative. Soldiers going to war on behalf of our elected officials deserve our help more than anyone.

Sure if they are actually injured. But if you just complain about anything during your exit physical you're going to get 20-30%

You really believe that? Poverty was rampant in the 1950 and early 1960s especially among the elderly. Plenty of citizens did without proper medical care back then. Which is why your sister is current on "crack" aka Medicare for which I gladly pay.

The two examples actually produce wage and/or tax revenue back into the economy, please try again

If the "poor" now were left to the conditions of the poor in the 50's, they would be curled up in a heap whining and crying "poor me"....back then, the poor would feel blessed to have what the "poor" have now....and they didn't whine or expect a handout.

They take from another profitable part of society to receive those benefits. I'm not saying all welfare is wrong but we are addicted as a society and will defend our own welfare to the bitter end.

You really have no clue do you? I guess that's why you keep burning the fries at McDonald's. Keep practicing...I see a drive-in window in your future. Just try and get my order correct.

Welfare is needed, I don't disagree with that and I don't mind a portion of my tax money going to it. My problem is generation after generation living off of it, when they're fully able to work. Everyone on this website can honestly say they've seen abusers of the system. I can't imagine the taxpayer dollars that go to abusers.

No one is keeping tabs on that, we just keep giving and giving. That's a problem that needs to stop immediately.

Until conservatives end their untouchable military spending and troop compensation hypocrisy this whole line of banter is a disingenuous waste of time.

Military spending, social security, medicare.

All else is just noise and bullshite.
