Robin Williams was excellent as a serious actor

Not just Good Will Hunting imo

I've heard it can be easier to do serious over comedy

He really was. A lot of people look at movies like Mrs. Doubtfire and Patch Adams as comedy, but both had serious undertones and subplots (divorce, child estrangement, terminal disease, mental illness) that he pulled off brilliantly.

He was also really good in the first part of Hook when he had to play serious adult businessman Peter who abhors make-believe and is kind of an a-hole.

Someone asked Vince Gilligan about that and he said that comedic people have better range. Funny people can do serious, but serious people can't do funny.
