syria being a part of the russian sphere of influence has been one of their more important pieces of international diplomacy going as far back as the soviet union when they shared a border. and not to mention the fact that syria lets them have a naval port on the mediterranean which is huge. they have historically had a really strong relationship with syria and they do not want that to change. and thats also before we get into oil pipelines and shite

A naval base in Tartus, Syria. That's why they're helping Assad. The Russians get access to the Med in return.
