I think it goes even deeper than that. For many of them, this is the first time that the real world has ever told them that they are wrong. Maybe they've seen "fringe" righties trashing them online, but virtually every person they know in the real world thinks just like they do. And they've assumed that the people living inside their personal bubble must be just like all other people living around the world (side note, it's also part of the reason why they empathize with middle east Muslims so strongly - projection bias).
So when so many Americans refuted their closed bubble mindset, well, it bursted their bubble. And now they are freaking the frick out because they have never experienced the disappointment/anger/embarrassment that accompanies realizing you were wrong.
Basically, their parents/society has failed these snowflakes terribly. These are emotions that childhood should have prepared this people for, but they were too sheltered to ever learn from disappointing outcomes

Bingo. The generation that isn't used to being told "No" just got told no in a YUGE way.
