damn shame is what it is...no one deserves to be released from jail after 6 minutes if he was arrested for beating up his wife.
folks in that area would have been smart to re-elect chuck fowler...instead, they chose Hilton.
ETA: meant to say Chuck Wagner

Do you know how often shite like this happens? Maybe not this exact situation, but lets say you are driving drunk and you fun off the road and have to call for help. If people know who to call to make sure the right police show up, if it was anyone else they would be going straight to jail, instead.. its just an accident.
That's just an example of shite you don't even hear about, but this these type of things happen all the time.

Sheriff basically admitted he did it as a favor to save him from embarrassment and because he was important. He admitted to doing it for others too. Rapides gonna rapide.
Big shoulders? More like he knows he is in an elected position and he is safe in Rapides
quote:
Hilton explained that he received a phone call from Olagues Thursday evening as he was being arrested by Alexandria Police at his home in Alexandria. Hilton said that due to the importance of Cleco’s position in the community, he acted to spare Olagues from having to go through the full booking process that would normally include being held in a jail cell.
“I told (the shift lieutenant), get him in and get him out,” Hilton said.
quote:
Hilton stressed to KALB that he has taken similar actions in the past to help people in similar positions, regardless of their status in the community. He said that he realized his actions may subject him to public criticism, but that he had “big shoulders.”

There is an issue with special treatment but here's another angle-
First consider the conversation-
DO: "Sheriff, Darren Olagues here. Look, we've got a little situation here that you might be able to help me with. My wife and I were having a little trouble tonight, she got a little deep into the wine and called 911 and told them that I put my hands on her. Now you know me, I would never do something like that but we've got a couple of your deputies here at the house right now, and they are fine young men just doing their job but they told me that they are going to need to take me down to the jail and book me. Now you know that we've been friends a long time and that's worked out well. I'm going to need to keep this whole deal on the QT, and I'll need your help doing so. Here's the deputy, please speak to him."
Let's say Olagues gets booked and released in the Usain Bolt method he did and then turns around, goes home and immediately shoots his wife when he should have still been in the booking process? The Rapides Parish SO (spelled the fine citizenry of Rapides Parish) are now on the hook for civil damages.
That was an extremely poor decision by the Sheriff.
tl/dr: Do the crime, (or have enough of a reasonable suspicion to be arrested for a crime), do the time.
