I was against the meds, too, until my 4th-grader began to hate school because it was such a struggle to keep up. I knew she was ADD (she has other dx that would increase her chances anyway) but I thought it was a mild enough case that she needed to just tough it and grow out of it...but I was wrong.
I finally agreed to a low dose of Vyvanse for her at nine, and that shite worked almost instantly: She completed assignments. Homework time was cut in half - and she would do it without being told! Her grades came up and stayed there. She was happy, and actually enjoyed going to school.
I just hated myself for not doing it sooner and making her suffer needlessly.
...and Adderall is NOT the first thing the docs go for, don't worry.
