It seems counterintuitive that the leader of a country would resign from power. Throughout history leaders have fought to the death and would even kill their own countrymen to remain at the top.

Why is it that leaders from the UK, Italy, and New Zealand would step down after a referendum didn't go through? Brexit and now a downvote for change in Italy. No American president has ever stepped down because a vote didn't pass?

My assumption is that they were told to step down and actually fired by the donors that put them in power. Why else would you give up the position of leader of your country?

Confidence votes.

I wish the US government had this kind of structure.

We do have confidence votes, we just do it by elections.

They are typically ruling as a leader of a coalition of parties. A no vote on a big piece of legislation like that usually means that the ruling coalition will fall apart and that leader will lose his position anyway when a new coalition is formed.

In parliamentary type govts, party lines are held together fairly tight even after election. Say the president elect decides to back off most of what he campaigned on, or fails to hold a coalition together and everyone including congress loses confidence.

A no confidence vote or referendum vote would be in order.

Italy has a very long history of unstable government coalitions.

The problem is not new. Ever since Italy reconstituted itself as a republic in 1946, a year after the fall of Benito Mussolini, it has churned through governments. In the 67 years since Italians have had 61 governments (or 62, if you count Mr Letta’s), each one lasting for a little more than a year on average.

My guess would be that the worldwide debt crash would be getting ready to happen. My next guess would be that a lot of these leaders stepping down aren't true natives that tried to help. They don't want the native population blaming them for the potential catastrophe that is coming down the pipe.

This theory goes back to how the elite are buying up those bug out shelters in places like New Zealand.

they don't have 2 parties like in the US

most of these governments are collections of 3-4 parties. it takes a lot of backroom dealing to work out these big pieces of legislation. when they fail, it's a sign that leader is unable to keep all the parties on the same page. once that happens, you either wait until you're replaced or you resign. the honorable thing is to resign b/c fighting is against protocol and very wasteful (and may hurt future coalition opportunities for your party)
